Technology fails to survive and disappears with new technology
There are several technologies that users of electronic devices fail to like.
Several technologies, services finally retreated in 2015. Including Amazon smartphones, Windows media center, to replacement batteries that are no longer glimpsed by users.
Who needs a backup battery, if there is a powerbank, manufacturers install a permanent battery. Or watching TV in front of a computer, it’s rare nowadays, except adding software for streaming TV because there is already TV streaming technology on Android . Or Microsoft’s idea with cheap Windows RT devices finally failed.
Hard disk storage.
Although it still sticks with platter plates and lower prices, hard disks still have value at lower costs and large capacities.
Slowly, one PATA technology or rather IDE for computer storage has completely disappeared, when the hard drive uses a large ribbon cable.
In 2003 introduced the SATA hard drive interface with a small cable connection
PATA finally disappeared. SATA hard drive must coexist with SATA SSD.
Soon, SSD development was also transitioning to much faster NVMe.
Map printing
No trips in the past using printed maps.
One of the manufacturers of digital map replacements from MapQuest, launched in 1996 adopting old printed maps.
Company taken by AOL, moved to Verizon
Because it has important route spots that provide basic map information on the way, stick with digital applications.
But now who is not familiar with Google Maps, Google Street View and other navigation maps. Much more complete even realtime data.
Even airplanes use satellites for navigation systems.
Wake-up hours
At home, a small clock was placed beside the bed. Functions as an alarm clock, both battery models or older models with a rotary system.
Now we can simply wake up with the phone, and the music doesn’t ring like a bell anymore.
Alarm clocks are still available in digital models, but mechanical rotary system clocks seem hard to find anymore or not many are interested anymore.
Digital cameras replace analog
Travel, vacations and cameras are very close. But the missing parts were the printing press and film.
In the past, people brought a camera equipped with film, finished taking pictures, then the film was taken down for the washing process, and finally printed on photo paper.
Even though you have a printer at home, photo printing machines are still used today.
It’s just that there is no more film washing process like analog film camera technology.
In the past, traveling was very important to bring film. Now prefer to empty the memory card or prepare internet data to store temporary files on the internet.
Multi devices into one in your
own camera phone , own music player, paper map sheet, pager. Now can not be separated from smartphone technology.
Several devices are integrated into smartphones, some of the parts above can be replaced with hardware and applications.
Answering Machine
Leaving / recording messages to analog phones and recorded to cassettes seems to have become history in old films.
Technology has finished, replaced by many devices, from email, SMS, Chat
Seeing business opening hours, public places to shops
Phones used to be important for a company or business, before internet technology emerged.
Asking if there are new vegetables, what time the shop is open, is it open on Saturday or is it finished by phone.
Now do not dominate people see a conventional store, contact the shop owner.
When company, store and business center data is already recorded on Google.
Data retrieved by Google based on the activity of mobile users in one place. And accumulated how many people come there, what time, or any day.
The data also includes a telephone number that can be contacted, including the location address.
Sidecard
This application first appeared in 2012, and 2015 seems to have been closed. Initially to share vehicles such as private taxis, but failed to compete with Uber and Lyft.
Like many services in Indonesia, several applications appear simultaneously. Until the largest service GoJek and Grab remain, the rest leave or stop operating.
Windows RT.
Windows 8 is not enough to spoil the name of Microsoft Windows, even though users don’t like the look of Windows.
But Windows RT is even worse. If called Windows RT is the version of Windows 8 Lite, the target is for power-saving notebooks, or tablet devices. But it doesn’t work fully compared to the regular Windows OS system.
Windows RT failed because there wasn’t a lot of software that supported it, only the OS was busy talking about.
The development of the Windows RT OS was stopped by Microsoft at the end of 2013. After
Microsoft discontinued the Surface 2.
Replacement Battery
Since gadget technology emerged, the complaint was the battery. Good news, if the device has a battery it can be replaced with a backup battery. Some executives sometimes carry spare batteries to keep their notebooks working.
That’s the first story. Now no one complains about replacement battery technology or battery replacement. Some devices have installed permanent Apple iPhone and MacBook Air batteries, there are notebooks that cannot be replaced, aka only one battery and is embedded in the device.
Consumers do complain but time passes and no one cares anymore about the battery in the device.
Today many products already use permanent batteries. The iPhone is clear, Samsung, which maintains a replacement battery in the Galaxy Note series, has also no longer issued a replacement battery. LG only offers smartphones in the entry class for smartphone battery replacement.
Most smartphones already use a permanent battery that cannot be removed again.
Replacing the battery is no longer attractive to gadget users. Because it’s the same as having 1 battery is cheaper with an additional powerbank , compared to buying an additional smartphone battery.
Amazon FirePhone.
One product from Amazon wants to try to break into the smartphone market with the Amazon Fire Phone . The idea is not bad, the smartphone system is integrated with the giant online store Amazon. Such as Amazon Prime services and Amazon’s available services.
Unfortunately, not many people like it, even if the price has been slammed, they still don’t like it. It’s only been a year since the launch was finally discontinued, and Amazon lost for this product.
RadioShack
Established since 1921 until the end of 2015. Electronic device store from the old age aka the era of the first most complete electrical shop in America.
Selling telephone wires, pagers, and even resistors.
This company has great experience in electronics, even its name still shines in the 90s.
The chain of stores went bankrupt in 2015, half of the stores were sold to the American telecom company Sprint.
Windows Media Center
Created by Microsoft in 2002.
Additional software in Windows, became computers as entertainment media. The computer can be connected to a TV, to watch movies or listen to music, and connect to a remote controller.
Windows Media Center was launched specifically for Windows XP. With TV Tuner enhancement.
The main problem. Not an attractive person watching TV in front of a computer desk. In 2009, Microsoft discontinued this application.
Amazon Wallet
The idea of bringing electronic money, developed by Amazon. The fate is the same as Amazon’s Fire phone.
Amazon Wallet is a concept to store gifts and loyal customers from Amazon store.
Users can manage credits and debits on Amazon’s services.
Finally the service was closed in 2015 after a year of testing.
Secret
A simple application to make someone speak (express opinion), can not be known whereabouts on the internet.
Created by David Byttow and Chrys Bader. Get 35 million funds and finally have 15 million users.
The content is for anonymous posting, but something goes wrong, lots of gossip stories, and useless stuff without being filtered.
Finally, a Cyberbullying case emerged, until the users there felt bored with the behavior of other members.
Slowly, Secret’s users fell drastically, until April 2015 the founder of Secret announced suddenly to stop the service.
MP3 players for iPad, Zune, and other MP3 player manufacturers
When MP3 technology appeared, manufacturers such as Apple launched the iPod.
Music can be shared with the internet.
Makes the Walkman pass among teenagers. But not long, after smartphones appeared, MP3 Player also disappeared.
Emerged streaming music as Spotify entered internet music.
The MP3 format still exists but stopped in 2017. When its makers Fraunhofer Institute terminated their licensing program.
Messenger
AOL, MSN, BBM and Yahoo Messenger initially dominated the messaging technology. Substitute for SMS technology, relying on an internet connection on a BBM PC or smartphone.
In the 90s, sending messages was more practical than computers. And BBM appears that brings messaging directly in the hands of the user.
BBM is very reliable, lasts quite a long time. Moreover, it can only be used for small BlackBerry smartphones.
But technology changed after the advent of Android.
Many applications such as Line, Whatsapp, WeChat and others from various countries, dominate smartphone users to send messages.
More sophisticated, funnier and entertaining. Including the problem of the state, society, social life becomes a problem with the application from the impact of various chat applications.
But the name is technology, it’s up to the user to decide what to see, what to read, and what to believe.
Back to the previous generation of chat media.
MSN finally ended, the company Verizon bought AOL in 2015 finally decided to stop AIM in 2017. Following Yahoo Messenger closed in 2018.
BBM finally released exclusive technology on BlackBerry hardware devices, and the BBM application was released to other devices in 2013 until it was released to 3 Android smartphone OS models, Windows Phone or iPhone. Sending files is very limited to only 16MB. Reached 190 million BBM accounts in 2015
BBM was the most popular in Indonesia until 2016 and the most installed for Android.
BBM for consumers closed in 2019, only the paid version for enterprises survived.
In the past, it was normal to hear how many bb pins were, now… it seems to sound strange.
DVD players and DVD Discs DVD
users use these media to rent movies.
Users also use DVD media to store file storage, movies and TV. When the DVD player is always in the living room, but not for long.
DVD rental abroad closed in the 2010s. The new technologies of Blu-ray and UHD discs are also not much on the market.
The reason is, it’s easier to watch live on the internet or cable TV for home entertainment.
What we now call an OTT service, Streaming, is something like that.
DVDs still survive, and are mostly used on computers. But not dominating consumer products anymore.
It’s even easier to back up using a FlashDrive which has a much larger capacity than a DVD.
Plasma TV
When tube TV is no longer an option. Plasma TVs dominate the high end TV market.
But Plasma TVs waste electricity, quickly replaced by LCD TVs and LED TVs. And lastly, OLED TV technology provides more dynamic colors.
LCD TV technology is not over yet, while it will be at the 4K or UHD resolution level. Although in Indonesia there is no service for such high resolution.
4G Network
While 4G or 4G LTE still survives in 2019. Even though 5G technology has appeared.
3G service providers in America are planning to remove them because they are no longer efficient.
4G is just a matter of time, and not the fastest smartphone internet network anymore.
Chip manufacturers for mobile phones such as Samsung, Huawei, Mediatek and Qualcomm are ready to support 5G networks.
Some cities already have high-speed networks. Indonesia is estimated to be ready for 5G by 2022.
Why was it abandoned? Need and speed.
4G or 4G LTE has a transfer speed of 150Mbps in theory, while 5G goes up to 10GBps.
The 4G network can be used for broadband internet with a modem. But still far less fast with 5G network technology.
It is clear that the fastest will be present, although there is still a need to wait.
